Rántí" is a visual homage to one of the most captivating Afrobeat songs ever made, "Remember", from Asake's Work of Art album, released in 2023. This piece is an artistic interpretation of the soul-stirring violin strings that make the track a personal favorite of mine. The song’s narrative of a romantic affair with a beautiful woman inspired the use of a female face as the centerpiece—a recurring theme in African art and Afrobeat culture. This trope encapsulates the themes of romance, prosperity, bravado, and beauty that Afrobeat often celebrates.
The piece aims to convey the experience of closing your eyes and immersing yourself in the song. The closed eyes evoke the act of listening deeply—feeling the strings resonate, stirring memories of love, happiness, and dreams. It is a visual representation of how music can transport you into your memories and inspire deeply personal emotions, when you close your eyes, listen, and feel the music.
The strings are prominently represented in the composition, reflecting the violin’s commanding presence in the track. The choice of emerald greens and golds was obvious—this is Nigerian art, after all, so we have to represent. The colors align with the broader palette of this collection and symbolize the resource and cultural richness, as well as the complexity of Nigeria. Green represents growth, hope, and abundance, while gold signifies wealth, cultural pride, and timeless beauty.
Asake’s album draws inspiration from the art of greats like Basquiat, and in creating this piece, I envisioned a world where our art is culturally significant enough to inspire such amazing music. At the same time, this music served as the muse for "Rántí", so I like to think we are already on our way to a world where this is a reality. Seeing it in person, with its rich textures and intricate details, is nothing short of breathtaking—a true celebration of the magical relationship between music and art.
